normally this time of year I have tons of Halloween goodies listed in my etsy shop. This year I have taken on the art/craft shows and am swamped with them. I have nothing to show in my etsy shop, NOTHING. This really does not look good when my month is coming up. October, Halloween....so.....I decided that since I can not keep my shop full of Halloween treats that I would at the very least put one or two items on ebay once in a while. so Here is Don, the very grumpy, rude, and just plain nasty pumpkin who has been hand picked by me to be made into a pumpkin pie or sold on ebay.

Bugsy's Birthday Bash!

Today our little Samantha turned 2! My youngest calls her Bugsy, which is pretty apropo since she likes to eat bugs (and dust bunnies...).
I made her a puppy pie to celebrate the day, and she let us all sing to her. She was happy to have the pie to herself (it was made with dog food filling...) and kept looking for more!

I've been concentrating on more complicated jointed dolls mainly this year so it's been a real joy to get back to basics with my traditional Freaky Little Things rag dollies for a bit. I missed their odd impassive faces!

Here is Lilith, she has a poly-bead filled ball skirt and cute little distressed metallic wings. She can hold your jewellery or a photo or keepsake for you or just cuddle her fleecy bat, Norman. In the shop later today :o)

New Doll ~ Juliet!

My latest doll was created for a group's "Shakespeare Challenge". I created Juliet, a Paperclay full body sculpt. She is approximately 17" and stands on a sculpted base. The beautiful dress consists of lace-edged, muslin bloomers (of course!), a sleeveless underdress with beaded neckline, and a very elaborate overdress of brocade. The overdress laces at the front, back and sleeves. She wears a matching skull cap and velvet beaded slippers. She holds a rose symbolizing her lost love. I hope you enjoy her!

When Gator girl was in her mama's belly her Mama came across a big Old Alligator. The alligator got just one little tiny bite, lucky for Gator girl's mama, she manged to escape. Maybe the Alligator let her go, knowing what it had done or maybe luck was on her side that day. Frantic she made it home and told her husband what had happened. He hunted down that Alligator and shot it dead. Needless to say, on the day she was born that Big old alligator got the last laugh.

Wips and other things...

I joined a skelly swap last year,and you can see more on my blog, Bone*Head*Studios hosted by Dani Nelson of Ambitions Designs and owner of STJ, where I sell my art dolls, and the swap partner I was paired with was none other than Christine of Du-Buh-Du, I was in such a hurry to send her gift out that I completely forgot to take pic's of my piece !!! I realized too late that all I had were the wips, she graciously said she would send some pic's of it, so I'll post when they arrive. This is what I sent her.

What's Been Brewing...

As I haven't posted in a rather long time, I thought I'd give a little update. My first piece of news is that I finished my first full-body sculpt in Paperclay, and have started on my second! I am really loving this medium and will be sticking with it for the time being. My first sculpt is named "Corinne" and is a lovely fairy in Regency period dress. I love that time period, and will be doing a series of dolls from Jane Austen's books eventually.

My second sculpt is for another team's challenge based on Shakespeare's plays. I am creating "Juliet." She will be holding a rose with a tear falling down her pale cheek. I have finished hands, feet forms (she will be wearing cloth slippers), body core and armature, and am working on the head. I will post progress pictures soon.

My last bit of news pertains to my new blog. Yes, I have finally joined the bloggers in Blogland! My new blog is called "Wyrdlands Studios," and can be found at http://wyrdlandstudios.blogspot.com. I will be posting updates and WIP pictures of my latest work, and anything else that inspires and sustains me. If you have a moment, I would love for you to stop by and have a cuppa with me! :o)

Hi, this came out a bot more Romantic and Shabby Chic than I originally had in mind, but what does everyone think of it as a new blog template? The photos were randomly picked from a handful of our dollmaker's etsy shops to represents different types of dolls, fairy, paper, sculptural/abstract, goth and animal/human were what I picked.

Depending on if anyone wants to use this I can happily add a few more pics (not too many though) or change the existing images if anyone objects to their image being used or being left out. Open to suggestions. :o)

I am already thinking spring - my newest creation is a set of primitive bunnies in a vegetable garden. Designed to look old and time-worn, this vignette includes two stuffed cloth bunnies that have hand-sewn eyes and noses and antique rusty square nails for legs. The bunnies are browsing around in a cabbage leaf garden filled with carrots and turnips.

All Crafters - Read This and the Post Below!!!

This will affect most Etsy Crafters in the US. I was amazed when I first joined Etsy that so many of you make handmade articles for children - because the rules that Cynjonnoah has posted below (Please stop over and read this), are already the norm in the UK. In fact, right across Europe because of EU rulings. It is against the law to make OOAK or small batch dolls or soft toys, clothing, etc, for children, unless every component is sent away for testing and has a certificate. Testing costs A LOT.

Also if you make any object that might APPEAL to a child or looks as if it is meant to be played with. The only exception that I know of is "Collectors Dolls" or Art Dolls as they are sometimes known. Here you must clearly state that the article contains wire, etc, is not meant for children... AND IS NOT A TOY!!!! I was told by someone at my local Tradings Standards Office, that it is better to have wire and obvious dangerous components as then you are very obvious about not wanting a child to play with your handmade items.

It is insane and has decimated the craft scene here, the only people who are still making dolls and toys for children are those that don't realise they are breaking the law. The fines are REALLY heavy.

I've popped half a dozen more Either Way dolls into my Etsy store, some out of vintage fabrics from my ever supportive mother in law. They are about 10.5 inches tall.

Also I'll be attending a market in North Hollywood next Saturday, Jan 10th. It's not a craft fair - more like a flea market, but it has a cause behind it. Well, I finally made my decision when I came across some gorgeous yarn in my stash by Trendsetter Yarns. The yarn contains mohair, nylon and metal which gives it a bit of a glint. It's a bit tricky sewing the mane on something this small, but it turned out the way I wanted and when I put the first one I made in a local craft show, it sold right away.

I finished a Goth Cupid doll this week... she's completely hand stitched and stands 22 inches tall.

She carries a bow loaded with an arrow labeled lust. And a quiver containing two more arrows labeled love and hate.

Mountain Escape Soft Sculptured Art Lobster Doll

The design for this soft sculptured art lobster doll was inspired by walks Baxter State Park in Maine. One side features the mountain during the day, the other at night. Made from recycled/repurposed cotton, leather and denim fabrics. Machine stitched with hand-embroidered embellishments.

Adding to my Etsy store

I have a new batch of five Dream Star dolls which I am adding to my Etsy store one by one. This is in keeping with advice I have read about keeping things at the top of the search engines. I hope it works. I have raised my prices slightly in keeping with the gradual increase in the amount of time I am taking, especially with the skirts, and to reflect the higher quality of fabric I am using. I think they are still worth it, as most of my customers have remarked that my prices are lower than they would expect. So we shall see.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts about pricing strategies. I guess we can assume that few of us charge a genuine reflection of the time we spend on our beloved creations, especially if we factor in creative thinking and day dreams that lead to inspiration.
